CHARGES BROUGHT |

Two men due in court as part of probe into alleged human trafficking gang, Foreign gangs see Ireland as a Soft Touch.

  • Two
men are due in court later today as part of a garda probe into the
alleged activities of an organised human trafficking gang.

Last week, gardai arrested three men after searches of five locations in Co Cork and two locations in Co Roscommon.

    Gardai
said the searches came as a result of an investigation into the
activities of an Organised Crime Group (OCG) based in Ireland, with an
    Eastern European connection.

    A
garda spokesman said the group were involved in the “alleged
trafficking of persons into Ireland for the purpose of labour
    exploitation.”

    More
than 100 officers were involved in last week’s operations led by
detectives from the Divisional Protective Service Unit, Co Cork and
supported by uniform and plain clothes Gardaí, Garda Dog Unit, Armed
Support Unit, and Scenes of Crime Unit.

    This
morning, gardai confirmed two of the arrested men have now been
charged, while a third man has been released without charge.

A spokesman said: “Gardaí have charged two men (30s and 40s) who were arrested on Saturday 2nd March 2024 as part of an investigation into organised crime related activities.

“They are expected to appear before Midleton District Court this morning, Thursday 7th March 2024.

“The third arrested man (30s) has been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”

Last week, gardai also appealed to any person who may be the victim of human trafficking or labour exploitation to speak to come forward and speak with them, either at a local Garda station, or to call the Garda Confidential Phone Number on 1800 666 111.

“An Garda Síochána understands that victims of these crimes may not always be in a position to report themselves, maybe there is opportunity to speak to a Garda who you might meet at any location,” gardai added.

“Importantly, An Garda Síochána appeals to any person with any information on these heinous crimes or suspects that any person is the victim of human trafficking to speak up.”
