As counting continues across the country in the family and care referendums, it now seems all but certain that both the referendums will fall.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has suggested she would run another referendum to remove the so-called “women’s place in the home” clause but committed to not running the same question again.

She would not, however, directly back calls from one Sinn Féin TD calling for Equality Minister Roderic O’Gorman to step down.

“Can I just say that it’s important that the people have spoken that they’re heard. I think it’s a moment of reflection for the government who went on a solo run on these matters. They failed to collaborate in any way,” she said.

“They also failed to convince the electorate.

“Bottom line is this, the issue of caring and carers, the rights of people with disabilities to their full rights as equal citizens, to their rights to supports and services are now absolutely centre stage.

“In the end, a Government that has such a bad record in terms of supporting people with disabilities, in terms of recognising and supporting caring and carers was never maybe in a position to win a referendum like this with the people.”
