A MAN in his 30’s is fighting for his life after his leg was almost severed during a vicious attack with a machete in a County Cork town.

Gardaí have begun an investigation into the shocking assault which happened in the car park of a shop in Cobh in East Cork.

The serious injuries inflicted to the victim’s leg caused extensive blood loss which have left medics battling to save his life in hospital.

The attack was carried out  by just one assailant armed with a machete at the EuroSpar carpark on Newtown Road at about 8pm on Friday night.

The injured man collapsed to the ground after being struck on the leg. There were people in the area at the time and a number ran to his assistance.

The emergency services were contacted and when they arrived the victim was bleeding out and had already suffered extensive blood loss. The paramedics managed to staunch the bleeding.

The critically man was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for his injuries.

He is now in intensive care but according to the Garda Press Office, he remain in a critical condition.

Gardai are looking at a number of reasons for the horrendous and cowardly attack and are examining the possibility it may be due to a drug related debt or a feud between the two parties.

They have cordoned off an area in the EuroSpar car park and Garda technical experts began an extensive examination of the scene which they hope will lead to the collection of  evidence that will assist them in identifying the attacker.

They also have been  harvesting CCTV footage from the area to try and identify the attacker. It’s understood he arrived and fled the scene in a car.

They are appealing  to anyone who witnessed the attack or may have camera footage to contact them.

They have asked anyone who can assist them in their investigation to contact them at Cobh Garda Station on 021 4908530 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
