A man was last night fighting for his life in hospital after he and a pal were attacked by a gang in the street.
Gardai are investigating whether an earlier verbal row outside a shop led to the incident which has left one of the victims in a critical condition.
It is understood the pair were surrounded and battered by up to four men in the Grange View area of Clondalkin in South Dublin shortly after 10pm on Saturday.
During the incident, the severely injured man fell and hit his head on the ground. He was taken to Tallaght Hospital, where last night he remained in critical condition in intensive care.
The other man was also beaten, but his injuries were less serious. In a statement, gardai last night said: “Gardai are investigating a serious assault that occurred in Clondalkin, Dublin 22, yesterday evening, Saturday 30 March 2024.

“Two males, believed to be in their late 20s, were assaulted at approximately 10.15pm outside a residential premises in the Grange View Way area.
“One of the males has been taken to Tallaght Hospital were his condition is described as critical. The second male is also receiving medical treatment for injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
“A scene is currently held for technical examination. No arrests have been made at this time. Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.
“Gardai are particularly looking to speak with anyone who was in the Tower Road area of Clondalkin between 9.30pm to 10.15pm, anyone who was travelling on the number 13 bus between Clondalkin and Bawnogue between 9.45pm and 10.15pm and anyone who was in the Grange View Way area of Clondalkin between 10pm and 10.30pm.
“Any road users who may have camera footage are asked to make this footage available to gardai.”
