| Bellingcat’s Bi-Weekly Newsletter A Narco boss exposes his whereabouts via Google Reviews, a fugitive US militant is located in Utah and we share a few quick steps to find out how organisations take payments online. Here’s the latest from Bellingcat: Kinahan Cartel: Wanted Narco Boss Exposes Whereabouts by Posting Google Reviews Christy Kinahan is one of the world’s most wanted men, a notorious drug-runner and money launderer whose gang is implicated in multiple murders. A joint investigation by Bellingcat and The Sunday Times finds that he’s left a trail of Google reviews providing valuable new insights into his movements and whereabouts over the past five years. Open Source Researcher Connor Plunkett who investigated the story alongside Bellingcat and the Sunday Times said: There were some news reports that Kinahan had been using his first and middle name “Christopher Vincent” as an alias, including on some social media accounts. From this sprung the idea that maybe there was more of his online activity out there that had slipped under the radar. So, through a relatively simple Google search using his alias it was possible to find someone leaving reviews under the same name – and as it turned out, it was actually Kinahan. Bellingcat Researcher and Trainer Peter Barth added: I’m still surprised that someone with this criminal footprint has spent so much time on this hobby- leaving Google Reviews- while on the run from European and US law enforcement. This is a man whose organisation is responsible for organising contract killings…and on the side he’s reviewing P.F. Chang’s on his phone while bored. |
