Gardaí seized six cars from drivers without insurance in the latest crackdown by roads policing units.

In the latest shocking incident, six cars were seized and stacked up on a lorry after their drivers were found to be without insurance.

And two of the motorists were banned from driving and should not have been behind the wheel at all.

“Our Roads Policing Unit in Santry, North Dublin have picked up these six cars at a checkpoint after each one was found to be without insurance,” a garda spokesperson said.

“What’s more, two of the six were being driven by disqualified drivers.

“All now face a mandatory appearance in court.

Gardaí are facing a daily battle against illegal drivers, some of whom have made home-made insurance discs.

In two incidents yesterday, gardaí stopped drivers with fake insurance discs that had been home printed. One was even described as ‘arty.’

“No really, it’s everyday,” a garda spokesperson said.

Gardaí use an app which scans a vehicle’s registration and provides information about tax, insurance, and NCT status – meaning a paper printout on the dashboard sets off alarm bells immediately.

Motorists are liable to earn a €5000 fine, up to six months in prison, and five penalty points if caught driving uninsured.
