A 64-year-old property owner who dodged jail after he threatened to “blow his tenant’s head off with a gun”, insists: “I’m a good landlord.”

Sligo farmer Muredach Scott told our reporter he was at his “wits end” when he made the drunken threat to tenant Geraldine Kilcullen — before he labelled her an “outlaw” who has dozens of convictions for shoplifting.

In response, Ms Kilcullen acknowledged she has shoplifting convictions but said: “Ah c’mon, it’s much worse what he done …

“Look it, I’ve done shoplifting all my life to feed kids and all that. But what he done (sic) was a worse crime. I’m disgusted he didn’t get jail,” she said.

Details of the fraught relationship between tenant and landlord emerged before Sligo Circuit Court earlier this month when Mr Scott, of Belville, Dromore West, Sligo, admitted to a charge of engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour on January 25, 2022.

Garda Orla Greevy told the court Ms Kilcullen (51) was renting a house from Mr Scott at The Dunes in Enniscrone.

On January 25, 2022, the defendant arrived outside the house at 4.45pm having got out of the passenger side of a car.

Ms Kilcullen said the defendant appeared drunk and she told him to go away.

Mr Scott replied that this was “his f***ing house” and that he could come and go any time he like.

The judge said if a letter of apology was furnished to the tenant by the defendant within a week he would apply the Probation Act.

Approached by the Sunday World this week, Mr Scott told us he had furnished a letter of apology and hoped this would be the end of the matter.
