A GARDA has been arrested by investigators probing the death of GAA coach Niall MacEneaney after a hit-and-run incident.

The Irish Sun can reveal the officer was questioned by the An Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission after meeting them by appointment last week.

He was later released without charge as the investigation into Mr MacEneaney’s death continues.

Mr MacEneaney lost his life after he was struck by a car on the Rathmullen Road in Drogheda in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day.

It’s understood an off-duty Garda had been driving a private vehicle at the time of the incident.

The arrest comes after a car and a number of electronic devices were seized last month.

The officer who was questioned remains suspended.

A spokesperson from GSOC confirmed the arrest had been made.

The spokesperson said: “GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána on March 17, 2024, following a road traffic incident in Drogheda that took place in the early hours of the morning.

“The referral was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
