But he has told colleagues he was not driving the car when the incident occured at the Rathmullen Road, Drogheda in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day, March 17 last.

It is understood that GSOC, who are probing the incident, are now trying to establish who was in the car.

They have looked at CCTV footage of various bars and nightclubs in Drogheda to see who the Garda was with on the night in question.

They are also examining all footage along the route the car travelled to see if they can identify those involved.

Video footage from houses in the area has been seized.

It is understood that the car owner, who is currently suspended, had been out drinking with a number of people earlier in the evening.

The car involved hit Mr McEneaney and never stopped.

He was found by a shocked taxi driver on the road who made a 999 call.
