Three people have been hospitalised after an aggravated burglary in Cork.

The three – two women and a man – are being treated for multiple injuries after they were injured during the incident early on Wednesday morning at a property near Millerd Street.

All the house occupants were taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where they are being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

All three are expected to make full recoveries.

However, the three are said to be very shocked by their ordeal.

It is understood that one of the women was confronted by an intruder in the property shortly before 6am.

The second woman and a man ran to her aid and all three were then injured in the subsequent attack.

Gardaí said that a sum of cash was reported to have been stolen.

The intruder fled the scene on foot while the house occupants raised the alarm.

Gardaí and paramedics were at the scene within minutes.

Detectives immediately sealed off the property to allow for a full technical examination by forensic experts.

The technical examination of the scene is expected to continue throughout the day.

Gardaí are also checking CCTV security camera footage in the general area in a bid to determine the identity of the intruder or the direction in which they fled.

No arrests have been made as yet but detectives are hopeful of a breakthrough with their forensic examination and analysis of CCTV footage.

Gardaí are now appealing for anyone who may have any information to contact them at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork on (021) 4943330.
