The man who was killed in a suspected hit-and-run in Co Carlow has been named as Tom Connors.

It’s understood the 35-year-old motorcyclist had recently absconded from an open prison.

The incident, involving the man’s motorcycle and a car, happened between Rathoe and Ballon,at 11pm last night.

Gardaí say the car was burnt out and the occupants failed to remain at the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his remains have since been removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The motorcycle the man was driving and the car that was found burnt out have also been taken from the scene.

The vehicles, which were removed on two recovery trucks, will be further examined.

The road where the incident occurred has reopened following a forensic examination.


Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone travelling on the road between 10pm and 12am, who may have dash-cam footage, to contact them.

It is the third death on the roads in the last 24 hours.
