Two young children were inside a Dublin home that was targeted in a reckless gun attack overnight.

A garda investigation has been launched after a firearm was discharged at a house on Errigal Road in Drimnagh at around 1.30am this morning.

A single shot was fired through the downstairs sitting room window of the property before the gunman fled the scene.

The Irish Independent understands that an innocent woman and two young children were in the home at the time of the shooting but avoided being injured.

Detectives are now probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting but do not believe the occupants were the intended targets.

One source said: “The family are completely innocent and have no involvement in criminality”.

“No injuries have been reported. A scene was held and a technical examination conducted. The scene is now lifted and investigations are ongoing.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity of Errigal Road between 1:15am and 1:45am and have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this available to investigating gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Sundrive Road garda station on 01 666 6600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station,” the spokesman added.
