Retired detective chief superintendent John O’Brien accuses former taoiseach Liam Cosgrave of “morally washing his hands” of UVF attacks because he considered the IRA to be the “greater evil of the two”.

It is understood that British prime minister Harold Wilson personally informed Mr Cosgrave that a UVF gang was responsible for the Dublin and Monaghan bombings. However, it is claimed the taoiseach of the day took no action because the Irish side was “obsessed” with the IRA’s escalating campaign of violence in the Republic.
