A homeless man who tried to assault a garda when he was found walking intoxicated along Luas tracks had been drinking out of “boredom” and to combat the cold in Ireland, a court heard.
Xamse Jamac (32) was jailed for five months.
Jamac, from Somalia and of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to public intoxication and threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour.
Dublin District Court heard he came into Store Street garda station highly intoxicated on May 13. He left, fell and banged his head and an ambulance was called.
Jamac became aggressive and unco-operative and walked off on the Luas tracks in a manner that was dangerous to himself and road users. He attempted to assault a garda who approached him and had to be restrained.
Earlier, on April 12, he was stumbling intoxicated on Aungier street and became aggressive to gardaí.
The accused had 47 previous convictions. Jamac did not drink until he came to Ireland, his barrister Donal Pattison said. He was drinking “out of boredom” and to combat the cold in Ireland.
