Man (30s) rushed to hospital after violent hatchet attack in Longford town

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a man in his 30s was rushed to hospital after he was violently assaulted with a hatchet in Longford town.

The victim, who is from the midlands town, sustained a head wound as a result of the horrific attack which took place during the early hours of yesterday (Monday) morning.

He was transferred to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for treatment as gardaí immediately began an investigation into the incident.

The Sunday World understands gardaí are not treating the episode as being feud related, however.

Detectives are, it is understood, remaining upbeat in their efforts to further the ensuing investigation and are hoping to obtain witness statements over the coming days.

The Sunday World has learned the victim, who is known to gardaí and currently before the courts for an alleged serious assault in Longford town over a year and a half ago, was purposely singled out by his attacker.A garda spokesperson said while no arrests have yet been made, investigating officers were examining all circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Gardaí received report of an alleged assault in Longford town in the early hours of this morning, Monday 3rd June 2024,” said the spokesperson.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this time.”
