A man with a string of convictions for sexual assault is to be deported home to Africa, gardai have confirmed.
Chico Makamda was jailed in 2019 for a horrific attack during which he trapped and attacked a woman before beginning to masturbate in front of her.
In July 2022, Makamda was returned to jail for two years after failing to leave the country as a condition of his sentence.
Makamda has 15 previous convictions, including for an offence of indecency and for the false imprisonment of a woman in a laneway. He had been in Ireland since 2009.
Makamda was deported on Friday, gardai have confirmed.
“Gardaí attached to the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) and with the assistance of Department of Justice successfully executed a Deportation Order of Chico Makamda to Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday 7th June, 2024,” a spokesperson said.“Chico Makamda was serving a custodial sentence in the Midlands Prison for Failing to Notify a Change in Details in contravention of the Sex Offenders Act 2001, and has nineteen (19) recorded previous convictions in the state for numerous Sexual offences, False Imprisonment and Theft.
“Given Chico Makamda’s criminal background this deportation was a priority operation for GNIB,” the spokesperson added.
“This is the first removal by An Garda Síochána to Democratic Republic of Congo and comes after a significant amount of engagement between officials from Democratic Republic of Congo and GNIB, which facilitated obtaining travel documents, visas and the coordination of escort arrangements.”
Chico Makamda had been sentenced in 2019 to seven and a half years with the final two and a half years suspended on condition that he leave the country within 14 days of his release.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard in July 2022 that Makamda failed to leave the country as required after being released in January that year and in the mean time accrued two convictions for failing to notify gardai of his address as required for registration under the Sex Offenders Act.
