Those spreading hostility towards asylum seekers to Ireland often throw out numbers.
But each number, of course, is a person. And, they ignore what, in fixating on limiting numbers, blocking routes for travel and opposing sanctuary, they would condemn other people to.
Block safe routes? Look at Tunisia – where the European Union gives millions for “border management” – and where immigrant men, women and children trying to pass through are picked up and dumped in the desert, without food or water. Many die.
Stop offering shelter? In this week’s issue, a homeless Palestinian asylum seeker in Ireland says that, after assault and abuse and rough-sleeping in Dublin, he just wants to go home to the West Bank. He has even withdrawn his asylum claim.
He tried to get help to return under a scheme run by the International Organisation for Migration. But they won’t right now, they told him.
His home is too dangerous, they said.
