VETERAN gangster James ‘Jaws’ Byrne helped to mastermind a hit on The Monk’s innocent brother, The Irish Sun can reveal.
Byrne — whose son David was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in February 2016 — and his associates recruited hitman Michael Carroll, 45, to kill John Hutch, 65, at his home in Drumalee Park, north Dublin, on September 2 that same year.
Our revelations come after Byrne — who had been suffering from ill health in recent weeks — passed away at Tallaght Hospital on Saturday night from kidney failure.
His death comes after his nephew and senior Kinahan gang figure Liam ‘Bop’ Roe, 44, also died after an illness last month.
Details of James (Jemmy) Byrne’s funeral arrangements were announced yesterday on RIP.ie but there was no comments section. This comes after Roe’s death was mocked on the site, including a message from a user claiming to be Daniel Kinahan.
It is understood he’ll be laid to rest alongside slain David in Mount Jerome Cemetery on Friday. Jaws’ son Liam is currently being held at a high security prison in the UK before his trial for alleged firearms offences gets under way next week. “Jaws had spent his life involved in fraud and illegal passports but he took a central role in the feud and identified targets. When Daniel Kinahan went to Dubai it was people like him who wanted to keep their war going. He was driving the whole thing because of what happened to his son.”
The source added: “John Hutch’s son Gareth had already been killed and his other son Jonathan had also been targeted. The Kinahans were determined to wipe out the whole family and Jaws was behind this.”
Jaws was last seen out in public at his son David’s graveside on the eighth anniversary of his death on February 5 this year. Gerry Hutch was later charged with David Byrne’s murder and it emerged that he wanted to make peace and approach Jaws to put an end to the feud.
