Detectives investigating the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier held an emergency conference in 2001 where they discussed allowing chief suspect Ian Bailey to flee to the United Kingdom so they could tip off the British authorities about his presence, according to a new book.

Investigators learned of Bailey’s plan to flee from Ireland five years after Sophie’s murder and just four days after he assaulted his then-partner Jules Thomas.
