If Michael Martin really believes Bailey is guilty, then he should stop the cold-case review, save the Irish taxpayer €6m and he could pay for 20 bike sheds. A bike for every TD. One for everyone in the audience,’ Jim Sheridan added.

The late Mr Bailey’s solicitor Frank Buttimer also spoke to the Irish Mail on Sunday this weekend about the Tánaiste’s comments. He said that unlike Mr Bailey’s ex-partner Jules Thomas, he did not think a public inquiry into the death of Ms du Plantier was a good idea.

Film director Jim Sheridan has invited Tánaiste Micheál Martin to accompany him to France to visit a man he believes is connected with the unsolved murder of French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

Mr Sheridan– who directed Murder At The Cottage, The Search For Justice For Sophie, which delved into the brutal murder- was speaking to the Irish Mail on Sunday following comments made by Mr Martin this week.Jim Sheridan was forthright in his response this weekend suggesting Mr Martin was ‘overstepping’ his office with the comments.

‘Is Micheál Martin seriously saying that the Irish Supreme Court was lacking in accountability when they refused to extradite Ian Bailey to France?’ he said. He’s [Martin’s] saying you can’t trust the Irish legal system. It’s extraordinary for an ex-taoiseach to say that. It’s his system.’

However, Jim Sheridan also called into question the Irish court system’s handling of the case, saying: ‘I would say that what’s more worrying is the Attorney General sending the file to France over the head of the DPP. Was that a full file? I think it was a limited file.’

He also issued a public invitation to the Tánaiste to accompany him to France where he believes evidence points in a different direction.
