Last month, reports revealed how the Office of Public Works spent an incredible €336,000 on a partially covered bike shed for the Leinster House campus.Officials from the OPW are due to be hauled before the Oireachtas Finance Committee tomorrow where they will be asked to explain the eye-watering expense.

Figures supplied to the Oireachtas Commission show that more than €121,000 was spent on steel works as part of the construction.

The Commission, which oversees the running of Leinster House, got a breakdown from the OPW which put the cost of granite in the region of €45,000.

Surveying work came in at €11,000, while the “outer work” on the shelter came in at €11,000, with VAT totalling more than €38,000.
