The tragedy is that he has so much potential, and he was so resilient and good-humoured, but the stress ground him down in the end and he went back on the drink. In the end, no one could help him – not even people who believed he was innocent. He was impossible to talk when he was drunk. His partner gave three decades of her life to him. His solicitor represented him pro bono for twenty years. The most anyone can do for Ian Bailey now is pray for him (if you’re religious) and counteract the narrative, based on absolutely zero evidence, that he was a murderer. Maybe he’ll get a posthumous pardon like Harry Gleeson.
