A court heard that Ann Marie Keenan, 37, made the unfounded and “devastating” accusation against a “innocent man” who was left “reeling” and horrified.
She claimed to have lied about going to a hospital sexual assault unit after she “escaped,” picking two more men at random from Facebook to be her accomplices, reports Sunday World.
Keenan had “no axe to grind” with the victim, was a “good mother” with no criminal history, and was “at a loss” about why she had done what she had done. The “horrendous allegation” had “untold damage” and “taken up much needed garda resources,” according to Judge Monika Leech.
Keenan was given a nine-month jail term, six of which she suspended.
Keenan, of Kildonan Avenue, Finglas, entered a guilty plea to lying to gardai on August 13, 2022, as well as January 4 and February 14 of last year, allegedly revealing that rape offences had occurred, reports Sunday World.
Investigator Garda According to Tracey O’Reilly, Keenan initially came out with the claimed rape on August 11, 2022, stating that it took place somewhere between 2012 and 2014. After two days, Keenan went to the garda station on Fitzgibbon Street and filed a complaint, naming the man and the hotel.
She said that she fled the scene of the incident and visited a hospital’s sexual assault unit. She said that she had reported what had transpired to a garda and another lady.
The officer Keenan said she spoke with did not exist, and the lady told officers she knew nothing about it.
