A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 58-year-old man in Co Mayo last Wednesday night.
Liam O’Leary, of no fixed abode, was brought before Castlebar District Court today.
Detective Sergeant Hugh O’Donnell told the Court that he arrested the accused in Ballina Garda Station this afternoon and charged him with the murder of John Casserly.
Mr O’Leary made no response when cautioned.
Given the nature of the charge there was no bail application made.
The accused was remanded in custody to appear before a sitting of Harristown District Court next week.
Defence solicitor, Gary Mulchrone, said his client was a suitable candidate for legal aid, as he was not working and in receipt of social welfare.
Judge Fiona Lydon acceded to the application. She also noted a request that appropriate medical treatment – including any required psychiatric care – be provided to Mr O’Leary during his time in custody.
Mr Mulchrone also asked that the legal aid certificate be extended to cover a psychiatric evaluation of his client, which he said would be required in due course.
The accused is due back in court next Friday.
