A 40-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Co Kildare at the weekend, in which a teenage boy died.

Kedagh Moore, 16, who was from Graigues, Robertstown, died after being struck by a vehicle on the R403 in Blackwood, near Robertstown in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Marin Silaghi, with an address in Ballybrittas, Portlaoise, Co Laois, appeared before Athy District Court this morning charged with two offences.

Garda Mark Ryan from Naas Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He said Mr Silaghi is charged under the Road Traffic Act with a hit-and-run, failing to stop at the scene with the intention of evading liability where a death resulted on 10 November.

Garda Ryan said further charges are likely.

The court heard that Mr Silaghi had only moved to Ireland from Romania eight weeks ago to work in construction with the intention of moving his wife and children here.

Garda Ryan said Mr Silaghi, who turned 40 last Friday, was stopped at a mandatory drink and drug checkpoint in Carbury, Co Kildare, three hours after Kedagh had been struck.

Garda Ryan said Mr Silaghi was questioned at Leixlip Garda Station and was arrested on the hit-and-run charge at 6.36pm yesterday and made no reply when the charges were put to him.

Following a lengthy bail hearing this morning, Mr Silaghi’s application was refused.

No application for legal aid was made today.

Judge Desmond Zaidan remanded him in custody to Cloverhill Prison to appear before Naas District Court via videolink on 19 November
