  1. Ivana Bacik is Fine Gael Lite. She believes family homes should be subjected to Gift Tax if they go above the threshold imposed by the government, because any assets passed on through inheritanceor gifts are (to use her words) “unearned wealth”. By this logic we should all be taxed on the Christmas gifts we receive even though the purchaser already paid VAT.

Bacik is not alone in holding this belief. Fine Gael also believe it. However they make sn exception for business owners, who can avail of incentives to pass on their assets tax-free. So if you want to gift your son or daughter a hotel or farmhouse, that’s perfectly fine with Fine Gael. But if you just want to make a person (family member or even just a good friend) independent by giving them your house, you can’t unless it’s worth less than the arbitrary threshold imposed according to your blood-relationship with the recipient. You may be estranged from your family and very close to your friend, but Fine Gael is telling you your friendship is worth a lot less than blood ties. How regressive and indeed primitive is that?

Fine Gael and their sidekick Labour are not friends of the ordinary Irish citizens.
