This should make every normal person angry. Having a family is no guarantee of safety. What is the point of having child protection laws if they don’t actually protect children? Kyran is just the latest vulnerable child to be let down by the State. Another case that sticks in my mind is the murder-suicide in Monageer, Co Wexford, where a mentally vulnerable couple was able to fob off the social workers. Their relatives were worried and repeatedly asked social services to check on them. They stopped communicating with their families and were increasingly isolated in the community – they developed a siege mentality. A lady in an undertaker’s office raised the alarm after she got suspicious when the father ordered coffins…The gardai called to the house, knocked on the door, and went away when nobody answered. Later the while family was found dead…And there have been many other cases where children died or were abused, because the authorities operate on the default narrative that parents own their children.
