Ireland was miserable in the 80s. There was a Recession, food and fashion was awful, houses were cold and foreign hols were expensive. Also anyone who didn’t fit a narrow “normal” (married with kids, going to the pub every weekend and eating meat at every meal) was a misfit. Also it was practically a crime for a woman to be naturally slim (I was bullied for being “skinny”). Sexual harassment was as bad as it is now, only you couldn’t complain because everyone would call you a slapper.
