A garda superintendent under investigation for allegedly racially abusing a male security guard and assaulting a female member of staff at a Dublin nightclub has been criminally charged, following a Gsoc probe.
The superintendent has been charged with a Section 2 assault and a public order offence.
The high-ranking officer and has also been suspended from duty, Garda HQ has confirmed.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) confirmed to the Sunday Independent that the DPP has directed the officer at the centre of the probe be charged following the garda watchdog investigation into the incident which took place in August 2023.The Leinster-based superintendent is reported to have told a rank-and-file garda who placed him in handcuffs following the incident “do you not know who I am?”, in reference to his seniority within the force.
This led to the investigating garda contacting senior colleagues to attend the scene.
The incident was referred to Gsoc by gardaí in its immediate aftermath.
Gardaí took initial statements of complaint from the two alleged victims — a female bar manager and a security guard at the venue.
The probe was then handed over in its entirety to the Garda watchdog, which had the power to arrest the superintendent.
