| … Fed up hearing Islamic people tarred with the one brush. Their old scripture is similar to the Old Testament of our Bible: interspersed with pieces of prose and poetry modern people would find abhorrent, misogynistic, blood-curdling and in some cases ridiculous. Of course some backward fundamentalists take it literally, but there are many modern Muslims, just as there are modern Jews and Christians (ironically Christian fundamentalists tend to ignore the teachings of both Christ and Moses). When talking about Islamic culture, it’s disingenuous not to make the distinction between those whose understanding of theology is primitive, tribal, magic-minded (indeed paganistic) and those who can think in the abstract with a mature understanding and an acknowledgement that the ancient scriptures were written at a time when women and children were regarded as the property of men. Likewise civilised people wouldn’t sacrifice animals; we know they are sentient beings deserving of the right to be treated with humanity. Some academics believe Jesus was vegetarian. |
