THE man arrested on board a train with an antique gun after causing a major security alert acted out of pure “stupidity and naivety”, senior sources said.

He had been travelling to Dublin on Wednesday evening on a rail service carrying a decommissioned rifle which he was going to sell.
The man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and later releasedHowever the man – who boarded in Kildare – did not have the firearm concealed appropriately and a panicked fellow commuter who could see it was a gun rang 999.
It sparked a huge security alert at Connolly train station, which was swarmed by gardai and armed officers before the train arrived and they searched it.
A source told us: “A call was made by someone else on the train because the rifle wasn’t concealed properly.
“There was a massive response to Connolly Station because the gardai simply did not know what they were dealing with at that stage.
