When Ireland legalised abortion and same sex marriage, one of the most controversial and influential figures was Katherine Zappone. Zappone is an American and Democratic Part activist who moved to Ireland, got elected, campaigned for both referendums then moved back to the States and campaigned for Joe Biden in 2020. Zappone as an Independent TD made up the government that legalised abortion, campaigning for a ‘Citizen’s Assembly’ to soft launch legislation before threatening to quit the government if its ‘findings’ were not adopted. In a 1991 book, she spoke about her interest in Wiccan rituals. She stated: ‘I have participated in Christian feminist rituals, rituals facilitated by Starhawk, and rituals with Mary Daly where we celebrated the presence of earth, fire, air and water in our lives. “I have guided and been guided by imaginative meditations that heal others and myself. “These, and many other personal experiences convince me of the need for both the radical transformation and the creative replacement of patriarchal sacred symbols.’ After she lost her seat in 2020, she became a full time volunteer for Joe Biden. In 2021, the government invented a bizarre made up position called ‘Special Envoy to the UN for Freedom of Opinion and Expression’ for which Zappone organised a get together in Dublin for Irish politicians, at a time when people were being jailed and fined for attending funerals of loved ones and even for attending Mass. She is now back to seek election as a Senator in Ireland.
