Pets from Ukraine have cost the Irish taxpayer up to €1 million per month since March 2022. In a Parliamentary Question raised by Michael McNamara TD in April 2024, Micheál Martin attempted to defend the indefensible decision of the State to pay up to €1 million a month for the transport and accommodation of pets from Ukraine as a “humanitarian” and “compassionate” response. Questions should be asked about who authorised this crazy decision to accommodate pets from Ukraine,at the Irish taxpayers expense, which was not required under the Temporary Protection Directive? At a time when homelessness in Ireland has  surpassed 15,000 for the first time since the figures began to be compiled more than a decade ago, the media appear are more concerned about Ukrainians being asked to leave pets behind than addressing the core issue of how many billions have been spent by the State in pursuing their mass immigration policy, which is destroying our country and the future of our children. How many homes could have been built between March 2022 and now for the Irish homeless by the millions upon millions of Irish taxpayer’s money, spent instead in accommodating Ukrainians’ pets?

  1. I’m all for being kind to pets, but couldn’t these people just go back to Ukraine and bring their animals with them? It’s a vast country, and only a tiny corner of it is at war.
