It’s entirely possible that free Chinese AI models, like deepseek, will in the coming years disintermediate the western information system through which the current distribution of power and wealth in the west is maintained. Free Chinese AI systems may very well break the ability of vested interests in the west to “manufacture consent”. And across every imaginable policy area from foreign policy to economic policy. Put another way, anyone in the west will be able to reliably filter all western media and political discourse through free Chinese AI systems which may likely reliably highlight and explain away anything approximating BS or propaganda. In a very real sense, it may likely become incredibly challenging for vested interests in the west to “spin” the public at large because of free Chinese AI systems like deepseek. The future of course is uncertain, but I think this is a certainly a medium term possibility. If it comes to pass, the current era of vast upward redistribution of wealth in the west, along with slowing innovation, will likely come to an abrupt halt. The power of an ever wealthier elite to influence policy will likely be reduced or even ended. Time will tell.
