Old people are vulnerable storing cash in their homes. Anyone who won’t take cards needs to be told about battery-powered card readers, the kind used by tradesmen and chip van staff (eg, Sum Up). Of course some traders are doing mixers and want to hide their earnings from the Revenue, and customers are desperate to get work done, so they give in to the pressure to pay cash. But if cash didn’t exist there would be no such pressure. And online scammers would be easy to track if there wasn’t an opportunity to withdraw the stolen money from an ATM in a far-flung country. Cashless society will only work if every country buys into it. My book “Cash Kills: the case against untraceable currencies” examines the arguments on both sides, and cites case histories of real people mugged, terrorised, pimped and even murdered – for cash.
