HOW THE NAZIS CONTROLLED INFORMATION | CENSORSHIP & PROPAGANDA When the Nazis took power in 1933, they banned free speech and controlled all media to spread their ideas. Speaking out against Hitler—even joking about him—was illegal. They shut down anti-Nazi newspapers, burned over 25,000 books they didn’t agree with, and banned Germans from listening to foreign radio. During World War II, people could be sentenced to death just for hearing news from outside Germany. The Nazis used propaganda to make Hitler look like a hero, spread lies about Jewish people, and brainwash kids through groups like Hitler Youth. Schools were forced to use textbooks that praised Hitler and the Nazi Party. Source: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
