Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill have confirmed they will not travel to the White House to meet US President Donald Trump next month.

The two Sinn Féin leaders, and their party, will not travel to meet the US president for the St Patrick’s Day festivities in protest at his foreign and domestic policies.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference at the Alex Hotel in Dublin, Ms McDonald said Mr Trump’s comments on Gaza, Ukraine and domestic issues in the US mean her party cannot justify travelling to Washington DC this year.

The Sinn Féin move follows a similar announcement by the SDLP in recent weeks, and echoes calls from a number of other Dáil opposition parties.

It will also place significant pressure on Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who remains set to travel to meet the US president at the White House during the St Patrick’s Day festivities, but has yet to be formally invited.

The move is likely to cause significant concerns that it may further risk the Irish economy, and Irish jobs, due to any potential backlash from Mr Trump.

This is in part due to the growing threat of EU-US tariffs and the impact of any withdrawal of US multi-nationals from Ireland, a concern highlighted by Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe on yesterday evening.
