We are told that 1.6% of the population in Ireland is Muslim – and for a number of (growing) reasons, I do not believe it. For one, my eyes tell me differently every day. I see a huge number in the county I live in, and today in Penneys, I see a variety of Eid Mubarack clothing. A large company like Penneys does its market research well. They wouldn’t sell this clothing across Ireland if they did not believe there was a market for it. Why does it matter if there I more than 1.6%, though? Well a number of things are changing as a result, such as halal slaughter increasing greatly to accommodate religious requirements of a few; and you as an Irish person or Christian don’t get told what you’re eating because there’s NO mandate on Irish food sellers or producers to tell you if a product is halal. Uness the product is spefically directed and marketed toward Muslims ((in which case they have a right to be told whether it is…but NOT you…see how that works?). There are lots of other reasons I care when they say there’s 1.6% Muslims in Ireland. For one, I don’t like being lied to, and when the government chooses to lie, we have to ask WHY and for what reason?
