Back in 2009, residents in the tough Russian steel mill town of Pikalyovo desperately called for authorities to intervene after all three factories in the town halted work and stopped paying full wages. They were surprised when Vladimir Putin arrived and publicly humiliated the plants’ oligarch owners. Forcing them to commit to restarting the plant or have it Nationalised. Putin intentionally faced down the Western backed Oligarchs. The people here haven’t forgotten.
