Earlier this week, Jim O’Callaghan restored the State’s power to revoke citizenship from naturalised citizens. Some see it as a very controversial….but there’s a very specific reason for its urgency: Ali Charaf Damache, born in Algeria, gained Irish citizenship in 2002 by marrying Cork woman, Mary Cronin, At the time, “he wasn’t religious”. But after the wedding, that changed. Mary told the court he became distant, once ignoring her in the street claiming his religion forbid him from speaking to women in public. By the end of their marriage, she said she was afraid of him. Damache went on to lead a jihadist cell that plotted attacks across Europe. He married again, this time to a radicalised American, and used both women to support his extremist network. He’s now serving 15 years in a US prison. When he gets out, he could be deported back to Ireland unless the State removes his citizenship first. The Govt. tried to do this back in 2018, but the Supreme Court blocked it. The process didn’t meet the legal standards for fairness. Now, with a new law passed in 2025, the State finally has the power to act and Damache is first on the list.
