My Nana had a black lace manilla and I used to want to wear it but it was only for grown-up ladies. Mostly the older ones (Nana would have been in her seventies at the time and this was in the 1970s, in Wexford town). I think it’s great that younger women are reviving this tradition in Spain. I believe Russian orthodox women wear something similar. It looks very glamorous and it’s a mark of respect in church – though I think anyone wearing a mantilla at Mass in Ireland would get some funny looks.
