The IT system, which had been intended to replace its finance and HR systems, was funded from the proceeds of the sale of around nine acres of land at the broadcaster’s Donnybrook campus in Dublin.

But it has now emerged RTE was forced to write down €3.6 million on an IT project that had to be partly abandoned.

The latest debacle follows a series of damaging revelations at RTE, including “slush fund” payments to presenters and extravagant spending.

Outraged Labour TD Alan Kelly revealed he would be writing to RTE director general Kevin Bakhurst to invite him to appear before a Dail panel over the IT system bombshell.
