Tom Humphries, a former sports journalist for The Irish Times, was convicted in 2017 for grooming and sexually abusing a teenage girl. He pleaded guilty to two counts of defilement of a child and four counts of inviting a child to participate in sexually explicit acts, with offenses occurring between 2010 and 2011. The victim was 14 when Humphries, then 45, began contacting her through his role as a volunteer GAA coach. Over two years, he sent her at least 16,000 text messages, many sexually explicit, and engaged in sexual acts with her when she was 16. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, serving 22 months at Midlands Prison before his release in August 2019. The case drew significant criticism for the perceived leniency of the sentence, with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre calling it “very disappointing” and social media reflecting public outrage. Humphries’ actions led to his dismissal from The Irish Times in 2017, and he reportedly fled to London after his release, with plans to move to Spain. The victim reported severe trauma, including flashbacks, panic attacks, and loss of trust in men
