Dr. Ronan Keogan, a former GP from College Square, Terenure, Dublin, was convicted for possessing and distributing child abuse images. He pleaded guilty in November 2022 at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to one count of knowingly distributing child pornography on March 26, 2017, and one count of possessing three child pornography images on May 15, 2017, at an address in Templeogue, Dublin. The case came to light after a woman reported receiving an explicit image from Keogan via the Kik platform, following interactions that began on the Ashley Madison website.
Keogan, who was 51 at the time of sentencing, received a one-year fully suspended sentence on May 3, 2023, with the condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour for one year. The court noted his cooperation with gardaí, lack of prior convictions, and significant personal consequences, including the loss of his medical practice, removal from the Medical Council, and marriage breakdown. The images involved were described as selfies taken by underage girls, with no evidence of violence or abuse of his position as a GP. He was suspended from medical practice by the High Court in December 2022 pending further inquiries
