The deafening silence from the national and alternative media in Ireland to Trump’s extraordinary speech in Riyadh speaks volumes about Ireland’s irrational hatred of the man and skewed moral compass. In 2009, Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize based on his campaign messaging, his call to action and vision of ‘hope’. Newsroom walls and computer screens across Ireland were covered in ejaculate as journalists worked themselves into a lather churning out praise. Did Obama deserve a Nobel Prize? No. It remains the moment when the council reduced the value of the prize to nothing. Does Trump deserve a Nobel Prize for his speech? No. Of course not. But he sure as heck deserves some even handed coverage in the press. Trump’s speech in Riyadh and Vance’s speech in Munich were blueprints to a more peaceful and prosperous world. They are the antidote to decades of neocon bloodshed and ruin and a vision for a world where trade is carried out with mutual respect, not with the a neo-colonial gun to the temple. I dare say if Obama had delivered either speech, he’d be on the first plane to Oslo to receive a second Peace Prize.
