At some point between now and end of September, the Re-Turn scheme will file its first full set of operational accounts. It’s estimated that around ~900million bottles were returned in 2024, out of a total of ~1.7 billion bottles sold. This means roughly ~800 million bottles were not returned. At 20cent a bottle = €160 million on Re-Turn’s balance sheet!! I recently submitted an FOI request to find out what this money will be used for… (naively thinking that maybe it will be reinvested into social causes etc) The response? “It will be used to maintain the scheme”
