John “Spud” Murphy, a former Garda Superintendent, was jailed for six and a half years in October 2022 after pleading guilty to possessing €259,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply at his Clontarf, Dublin home in September 2021. The drugs were found in his wardrobe, coal bunker, and car during a Garda raid prompted by suspicions of his links to the Hutch crime gang. Murphy, who retired in 2010 after 30 years of service, had accumulated €855,000 in debt from failed investments, including €300,000 lost in taxi licenses, and was described as a functioning alcoholic whose judgment was clouded. He was initially held in the Midlands Prison but was moved to the more relaxed Shelton Abbey open prison in 2024. However, he was returned to Midlands Prison in December 2024 after allegedly breaching temporary release conditions by visiting a pub in north Dublin. Murphy is also under investigation for allegedly leaking Garda information to the Hutch gang, with further charges possible. He is due for release in 2026
