A criminal investigation is now under way after he was suspected of making attempts to recruit contract killers who offer their services on hidden platforms on the web.

Detectives are trying to establish if the officer had “real intent” to recruit a hitman.

They are also probing if he was using the darknet for other forms of criminality.It’s understood his use of the darknet started in 2021.

Once the Garda investigation has been completed, a file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Garda Representatives Association has been made aware of the allegations.

One source said: “The garda is now suspended after these bizarre allegations were made against him.We contacted the GardaI for a comment on the allegations.

A spokesperson said: “As part of an ongoing investigation by the Garda Anti Corruption Unit into alleged serious criminality, a Garda based in Dublin has been suspended.”

At present, the darknet is used by criminals to source contract killers, drugs and firearms.
