RTE is facing growing fire over a controversial marketing campaign which uses actors to play journalists in the newsroom.
Stunned RTE reporters have already accused senior bosses of manufacturing fake news over the station’s use of extras to play staffers in a promotional video filmed in the national broadcaster’s newsroom.Workers are also furious that RTE spruced up the newsroom for the cameras, including the introduction of new plants which were removed when filming ended.
The NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Newsroom Chapel has written to RTE management calling for production of the advert to be paused pending further discussion with staff representatives.
But despite a fierce backlash from its journalists, RTE is pushing ahead with the controversial ad promoting the national broadcaster’s newsroom operation that will air this summer.
As the fallout over the promo continues, the chairman of the Oireachtas Media Committee today blasted Donnybrook bigwigs for using actors instead of staff, insisting it “just doesn’t sit right”.
