The grandfather of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was a Nazi. Josef Paul Sovinny was the mayor of the town of Brilon from 1917 to 1937. When Hitler came to power, he joined the Stormtroopers (“brownshirts”) and eventually achieved the rank of Obersturmführer. He was very enthusiastic about renaming streets. In Brilon, streets were named Adolf-Hitler-Straße and Hermann-Göring-Straße.

His character was described as a “true Aryan, wonderful family man.”
